Daily Trip Report - October 28, 2003

Prof. Perritt -
I met this morning with the Prime Minister. He was very well informed about our activities and thanked us profusely for helping to make a difference in Kosovo.

I met briefly with Mr. Thaci, and obtained his agreement to participate in the Symposium and his support for the amicus brief. We are to have lunch on Thursday.

I had a couple of meetings with Bill Klawonn, in which we reviewed in detail the arguments about why individual KTA directors and officers need not fear individual liability and therefore that privatization should be restarted. He will review with interest the draft amicus brief as of yesterday. Tomorrow, I plan to have lunch with senior people to discuss the freeze on privatization.

Dastid took me to meet his parents.

The waiters, Alban and Fahri, took me to dinner. After I encouraged them to place a priority on improving their English a couple of nights ago, they signed up--the very next day-- for English lessons. To celebrate this, I gave Alban an Engligh-only dictionary, and Fahri an Albanian-English/English-Albanian dictionary.

I urged them to realize that there is a new world in which they will not be held back by the things that held back their parents; that this is a world in which eighteen-to-thirty year-olds can "take back Kosova" from the old dinasours in politics, just like in the KLA, where a bunch of eighteen-olds "took back Kosova" from Milosevic; and that this new world can be like America, in which anyone can be anything he or she wants to be, if he or she is clear about the goal, courageous enough to pursue it, and tough enough to handle setbacks along the way.

They were attentive and, I hope, accepted my propostions.
