A
policy and legal symposium on final status for Kosovo was held in Chicago
on April 16-17, 2004. Distinguished academics and policymakers explored
legal and policy issues that should shape Kosovo’s movement from
its current status as a “political trusteeship” under the authority of
the United Nations to a political status in which the entity has more
conventional
relationships with the international community and states in the region. The symposium aimed at providing intellectual
and policy capital for discussions that already have begun at the technical
level and which are expected to ripen into the final status negotiations
mandated by U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244, which authorized U.N.
intervention in Kosovo. Appendix
A provides background on the conflict in Kosovo. |
